Beware of cheap underperforming clones

As of 2022 there are many badly performing clones on the market. V2/3GHz NanoVNA uses parts like ADF4350 and AD8342 which are costly and clones have been cutting costs by using salvaged or reject parts.

See official store and look for V2 Plus4/V2 Plus4 Pro versions only to avoid getting a bad clone. We have stopped selling V2.2 versions since October 2020, so all V2 hardware that are not Plus or Plus4 are not made by us and we can not guarantee performance.

I downloaded the software and I did read the manual before trying to install but the installer fails.  Trying to run the NanoVNA_V2Plus.exe, I get the message "cannot locate the LabView runtime engine".  I have installed NI-VISA and the LabView runtime engines (both 32 bit and 64 bit).  Running Windows 10 Pro.  Thie installation instructions also mentions an INI file but not where to get it or what's in it.
Any ideas?
Alos would like to know if the LabView source code VI is available>

Francesco 2022/04/15 18:24

Hello. this software installation is  I litle complicate (I'm software illiterate)

1.On my installation I daunloaded LabView comunity edition "FREE" make one accaunt daunload and installed.
https://www.ni.com/en-gb/shop/labview/select-edition/labview-community-edition.html
Step 1-a, step 1-b (attached screen shots)

2.Go to GThb  https://github.com/joeqsmith/NanoVNA-Solver64-
daunload the files: NanoVNA_Solver.exe ( https://github.com/joeqsmith/NanoVNA-Solver64-/blob/main/NanoVNA_Solver.exe ) and the NanoVNA_Solver.ini ( https://github.com/joeqsmith/NanoVNA-Solver64-/blob/main/NanoVNA_Solver.ini ) install on one folder *Step 2*

Bob W0EG 2022/04/16 11:12

I do have LabView Community addition installed and working (congrids to NI for making a free version of LabView available)..  Still get the error when trying to run the NanoVNA_V2Plus.exe even if in the C: drive root path.

Bob W0EG 2022/04/16 11:42

I did get a different program,  the NanoVNA_Solver.exe to open LabView and load but the VI is broken because of a missing DLL  lvsound2.dll and I assume an associated library.  I'll try to correct that.

download the file on the attached screen shot "Step2"

Francesco,

Thank you. I do have those files downloaded and have the LabView 2021
64bit runtime installed.

I can start the program but the VI is broken because it cannot find
lvsound2.vi and I cannot locate that NI runtime path. Pointing it to
another copy of the VI from the community addition (32bit) I get this error:

I add the lvsound2.dll put on the Nano-Saver file folder

Bob W0EG 2022/04/17 06:04

Yes, I did that, the LabView 64 bit runtime is installed from that link.

Re-running the install shows "nothing to install"

OK, ,I need to backtrack a bit.  I had LabView 2022 run time installed so I used package manager to uninstall it and then re-installed from NI and now have the lvsound2.dll file.in it's directory.
I place the installer exe in the same directory as the 2022 runtime and got the attached error.  I the installed the older LabView runtime 2011, ran the installer exe from its directory and got the same error.  Looks like the dll is nor ok but missing the sound lib

I'll keep trying.

Bob W0EG 2022/04/18 01:28

OK, I finally got it installed and the VI is working.  Used 7-zip and installed old version from here;

https://github.com/joeqsmith/NanoVNA_Software/releases/tag/0.10

Thanks for the help.

Bob W0EG 2022/04/18 02:44

One more question.  I now have NanoVNA V2+4  rev 0.1 installed and working.  To get the current version, I downloaded NanoVNA_V2Plus_2p08.zip from Joe's Gethub and extracted NanoVNA_V2Plus.exe.  That exe runs and open an installer dialog, the installer completer and  NanoVNA V2+4  rev 2.08 loads and runs.  However, it seems that an app exe is not installed I must run the installer each time to start V2.08.  What am I missing?

OK, got.  I simply needed to move the new exe into the same directory as the old (renaming the old or replacing it).  Its in C:\Program Files (x86)\NanoVNA_V2Plus
I didn't realize that if run from anywhere else, it will act as an installer..
All good now, Thanks.

Now to try to find some (affordable) better standards.

Francesco 2022/04/18 17:49

Hello if want better standard or go to spend a lot of money on other vast
money on ceep standard,

load the last @Dislord firmware with calibration standard correction use the
standard included on the NanoVNA

One of Joe's more recent videos talks a lot about standards. If I still
had access to a PNA, I could accurately characterize the
provided standards and then enter the corrections factors. Now retired, I
don't have that access. Actually, the provided standards are good enough
for my current needs, mostly under 1GHz. Joe's software is great. Would
sure like to see the source VIs.
