Beware of cheap underperforming clones

As of 2022 there are many badly performing clones on the market. V2/3GHz NanoVNA uses parts like ADF4350 and AD8342 which are costly and clones have been cutting costs by using salvaged or reject parts.

See official store and look for V2 Plus4/V2 Plus4 Pro versions only to avoid getting a bad clone. We have stopped selling V2.2 versions since October 2020, so all V2 hardware that are not Plus or Plus4 are not made by us and we can not guarantee performance.

Offset delay

canale 2020/12/20 07:16

Hi
I calibrated my VNA, now I would like to caracterize some additional SMA standards built by myself to use them as standards for a friend of mine.
The parameters needed are the offset delay of the additional SMA.
How can measure them for my additional standards using the NanoVNA-saver ?
Thanks
Regards
G. Canale

KUURRRTTTT where are you?!? :-)

its not that easy to measure or fabricate a cal kit but its doable

kurt made a lot of work to measure n and sma (and other) kits and
describes how to make your own ... how to accurate measure them and how
to use that data in saver or qt

KUUUUUURRRRTTT ... help this guy please (it way to complicated to answer
that in a short mail)

Hello Canale

It is very limited information you provide about your home made calibration standards. If the frequency of interest is HF up to 30MHz there is a simple method using the NAnoVNA saver.

After calibration of the VNA then measure the Open homemade standard and chose a phase trace and in the calibration settings tune the Offset delay until the phase trace is “flat” showing 0 degree for the frequency span selected and you have found the open one way delay.
Set it back to 0 delay and chose an imag Z trace and measure the Short home made calibration standards and tune the Offset delay until the image impedance is 0 ohm across the frequency span and you have found the short one way delay.

If you do not obtain these two “flat” traces return to the matter here again, as you the have other consideration to deal with

Kind regards

Kurt

Hi Kurt
thank you for your reply.
The maximum frequency of interest for me is 3GHz.
I understand your indication but there is still a point that I do not understand.
You say " in the calibration settings tune the Offset delay until the phase trace is “flat”
Can you please give more details about where in the calibration setting pan I should trim the
offset delay during the measurement of my home made standard ?
I use the Nanovna-saver-0.3.3
Thank you

Gianfranco

A sidenote... Saver 0.33 is very old

We are at 0.38 now

If you have problems they may have been solved in a later version

Means... Use new saver... And actual fw

Hi Gianfranco

In this menu. Maybe when going to 3GHz the phase and ImagZ will not be flat. Provide some screen images if not
Kind regards

Kurt

I used to be able to use my early SMA version 2.8" running v3.7 ,
and my 'N' type 4" running v2_2 or QT, from my win7 desktop.
that broke so now have to use win 10 or win 10 pro.
Got the 2.8" working though I would like version 3.7 or later, if I
could be sure how to do it.
Tried every version I can find for 'N' 4" without success.
The QT version seems to install, including the driver, but always get
the error message attached.I tried every USB port, confirmed via Device
Manager, but Refresh always returns Com 3. and error when I try to
connect.

use saver 38 and use an actual fw ... and set avg to none and save that
in slot 0 ... then saver works fine

if you se ag to say x5 and try to use saver thzen the soft ask for 100 p
but gees only 20 back ...

if averaging needed then use avg in the soft but in device set to none!

here all three soft do work fine ... with v2, v2plus and wih plus4

If you verify your calibration using the additional standards you will see the diff between what you calibrated with and those units. Now if you did the cal with pricey standards then you have a decent characterization.

Good idea
