Beware of cheap underperforming clones

As of 2022 there are many badly performing clones on the market. V2/3GHz NanoVNA uses parts like ADF4350 and AD8342 which are costly and clones have been cutting costs by using salvaged or reject parts.

See official store and look for V2 Plus4/V2 Plus4 Pro versions only to avoid getting a bad clone. We have stopped selling V2.2 versions since October 2020, so all V2 hardware that are not Plus or Plus4 are not made by us and we can not guarantee performance.

powering without a battery installed

Andrew 2021/06/29 05:35

Hi, just received my nanovna V2 plus 4, but don't have a battery as yet. Just like to check that there are no issues with powering it up for the first time via USB without a battery fitted?
Thanks,
Andrew

There was a message on here some time back that it was okay to run it
without a battery. I just got mine a few days ago and have used it
without the battery. Still looking for a battery to put in mine.

it should work without battery

any "normal" 18650 cell should fit (crack a defective notebook battery
open or wherever you may find an 18650 cell)

I found there was an option to purchase with, or without, but the
shipping cost was greater with the battery, and could only be done by
DHL (IIRC).

Thanks all for the replies!
I have powered it up via usb and it appears to be working so that's great!
Now to source a battery, and thanks for the tips about that.

Andrew

the second type of power source affects the measurement values.

I have found a source for the cells - Battery Source.

Is the flat top battery the proper type?

Yes, at least for the NanoVNA V2 Plus4.

Yep.  Flat top.  I got a Panasonic 3400 mAh.  I haven't timed it, but it goes through the battery relatively quickly so higher capacity is beneficial.

Thanks for the information.

I gave the wrong name for the supplier. The company I am looking at is Battery Junction.

Dear Zeljjo,

Could you provide a link where the behaviour you indicated ("affects
measurements") is explained?

Thanks,
Esteban.

I got mine from https://www.18650batterystore.com/

Hi Mike,
I've used a couple of different brands from Amazon.com with good results
but I see that neither of them is currently available. So, I search for a
YouTube video and found *THIS <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMZuHMlRw_0>*
one. After watching it, I guarantee you that I will *NEVER *buy a Chinese
battery, *AND *those that claim to provide 9,999 mah, or anything above
3,500 mah for that matter, are *ABSOLUTE LIARS*! 🤬

Indeed, an interesting video. There are lots of sites with hints on how
to tell fake 18650 batteries:

https://batterybro.com/blogs/18650-wholesale-battery-reviews/30828867-is-it-a-fake-18650-battery-featuring-the-samsung-25r

is but one example. I recently bought 4 18650 "3400 mAh" batteries
/and/ a torch for GPB 20, accepting that they were likely fakes:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08C74D9PP

They measured 2717, 2757, 2820 and 2828 mAh, when checked with this charger:
