Beware of cheap underperforming clones

As of 2022 there are many badly performing clones on the market. V2/3GHz NanoVNA uses parts like ADF4350 and AD8342 which are costly and clones have been cutting costs by using salvaged or reject parts.

See official store and look for V2 Plus4/V2 Plus4 Pro versions only to avoid getting a bad clone. We have stopped selling V2.2 versions since October 2020, so all V2 hardware that are not Plus or Plus4 are not made by us and we can not guarantee performance.

Where to buy (April 2021)

Patricio Cohen 2021/03/30 19:10

Hi guys,

Any clue where to buy V2 Plus4? It seems to be unavailable anywhere.

Thanks

Patricio

OwO 2021/03/31 10:39

It will be available this week. I will post an announcement here when it
is available.

Erich Kaltenbrunner 2021/03/31 12:15

Hi, the clue is patiently waiting, as soon as they get their displays they will start delivering. Buy from Tindie.

Konstantinos Bibis 2021/03/31 07:00

Does anyone know if there is a European based store that will have the original V2 plus 4 available for sale? With a purchase from AliExpress or tindie the Import duties and tax increase the price at least by 50%.

OwO 2021/03/31 22:10

None right now, but distributors add a 1.5x margin of their own (and you
still have to pay sales tax/VAT in your country) so it's most likely
cheaper to buy direct.

Component prices have gone up by a huge amount so there is no longer
enough margin to sell in bulk at low price to distributors anymore
unfortunately.

Erich Kaltenbrunner 2021/03/31 19:44

Hi,
If you have to pay import tax and duties so must the European reseller do and he will add those costs to his sales price. Do you really think you can get things for free?
And by the way it is far less then 50% here in Austria.
Erich.

Konstantinos Bibis 2021/04/02 07:18

" Do you really think you can get things for free?"
Is that really what you understood ?
A lot of goods can be purchased from EU retailers with similar or slightly higher price(including taxes) without having to wait 1-2 months. Plus, you have the support from the EU shop for warranty issues.
So, if instead of 120 EUR for a direct purchase i can get it for 150-160 from EU I personally will prefer it.

inverse 2021/04/02 16:52

In my opnion, you're both right and have your reasons.

As I see it, there is a threshold above which I'm leaning towards buying
from "local" resellers, both for warranty enforcement reasons and to speed
up the wait.

For example, I'd never buy an ESP32 module locally, because 1) it's going
to be overpriced no less than 2x the Aliexpress price and 2) I don't mind
enforcing the warranty for a $3 module, really not worth the hassle.
But when it comes to more expensive stuff, well, matters are different.
For example I'm not going to buy a smartphone from Aliexpress, nor I'm
going to buy anything above $150~200 if I can source it locally. That is my
personal threshold.

Of course, there are things that I cannot source locally: for example the
new and hardened HackRF with input protection circuitry, that is still only
available directly from the manufacturer and from one Aliexpress store. For
about $70 or so, it's a bargain I cannot refuse.

Same goes for the NanoVNA V2 plus4: there are only two places I can buy it
from and that's Tindie and the official Aliexpress store. By the time I get
to buy it locally, I'll probably have mine delivered already. Plus, the
price tag is right below my personal threshold.

This is how I see these matters.

Have a nice day!

It is available on Aliexpress now:

So the nanorfe webpage still points to a site that says it isn’t available. Is the aliexpress a supported version or a clone?

Lynn, WA4FKX

OwO 2021/04/04 23:47

The Aliexpress store linked from the nanorfe site is the official one.
The tindie store hasn't opened yet but will open in 2 days.

OwO 2021/04/04 23:52

There aren't any clones of the V2 plus4 (or V2 plus) yet. I'm working on
adding a page to the website where you can check if your unit is
original or not by enter your serial number.

RandMental 2021/04/04 12:24

I received my V2plus4 a few weeks, ago from the Aliexpress store, making sure I did not get a clone.

After uploading DiSlord latest firmware version, I only got a white screen.

Long story short I realised I received a unit with an STM32F303 without an FPU.

I feel cheated as the FPU makes a signifant difference.

1). Can I exchange it for a unit with a FPU?

2). How can I make sure a new one from this April batch will have an FPU?

Regards
How go I ensure I get a unit with a FPU

OwO 2021/04/05 03:38

In all of my tests enabling the FPU does not make any performance
difference, so it was decided to not require an FPU in the official
firmware. It's random whether the chips come with an FPU or not, so
there is not much that can be done other than ordering chips with new
datecodes. STM32/GD32 prices right now are already sky high and that
would push costs up further, and I really don't want to raise prices
even more. It's already tough with some components doubling in price
recently. Sorry about that.

DiSlord 2021/04/04 12:41

FPU unit not critical, in most cases useful speedup only for Time Domain (most time device wait measure) it allow reduce fw size

PS i add fw variants for disabled FPU also

Erich Kaltenbrunner 2021/04/04 22:40

Hi,

Aliexpress has been noted to sell clones as well. Make sure that you get what you want by requesting an assurance from Aliexpress. Batteries you can buy locally or on eBay, they cost about 6€ plus shipping for

Got mine ordered on Aliexpress today, paid via Paypal and about £10 postage to the UK. Note that AliExpress now adds the VAT at the source end so there should be no additional customs fees to pay. Overall, this takes the total price to about £135 including shipping and VAT at current exchange rates (from USD) which is still a good price for such a capable piece of equipment. Now lets hope it gets delivered by the end of April which is the current forecast delivery date. In the current circumstances it might take a bit longer.

I already have a Nano V2 small screen but want something I can actually see without my glasses. So I know how good this thing actually is. Mike G8PFR

Any idea when they will be back in stock? Aliexpress or Tindie?

I see there is a github repository for the V2 firmware. https://github.com/nanovna-v2/NanoVNA2-firmware . Is it the official/updated firmware for the Plus4? If I want to make a modification or something this would be a big plus.

Thanks,

Ali accepts Paypal BUT at an additional charge. Personally, I use my credit card. Tindle is less expensive for me as they don't collect tax.

OwO 2021/04/20 16:48

Heads up, recently there is some extra rough handling of packages by
Aliexpress logistics. This batch we improved the packaging, but there
are still reports of shipping damage. If you receive a unit with broken
screen, make sure you CONTACT SELLER with photos of the damage (click
the button that says "contact seller" whereever you bought it from), and
they will send you a replacement.

Received mine today looking pretty much the same.  Screen is not broken but case was bent/dented and when powered up screen looks like it is broken internally.  No comms to software via USB

Dispute opened with Aliexpress - they offered 1/2 price to keep DOA unit or full refund if I ship back on my cost. Now waiting to see where they want it shipped to and what method.

It is obvious the packaging is very inadequate.  The unit is in a small bubble wrap pack inside a thin cardboard box.

Too bad, now both Aliexpress and Tindie are out of stock again.

OwO 2021/04/21 11:02

There is plenty of stock reserved for this kind of replacements. But if
you have a dispute open, there is no way to request a resend. If you
bought from a trusted seller (make sure it says "NanoRFE Store"), you
can close the dispute and ask for a resend instead.

Dragan Milivojevic 2021/04/21 18:04

The seller or the AliExpress?
I have newer seen that and got my fair share of damaged
parcels. Always got a full refund after Ali staff stepped in.

chris johnson 2021/04/21 14:14

Sadly, mine also arrived in a very similar state. Following the advice from OWO above, I haven't opened a dispute. Instead, I've sent a message to the sender, but I don't see how to request a resend on the web page.

Chris 2021/04/22 04:00

I have just received my unit ordered from Tindie and it arrived perfectly OK.
The packing had some padding, bur considering possible rough treatment during the delivery process, a box in box packing with additional padding would be recommended.
The deliverytime was also perfectly OK. I did order in the small timewindow, when they still had the new stock.

Chris

robgrangernz 2021/04/22 05:24

Mine also arrived bent/cracked. I raised a dispute and also messaged the seller and arranged to be sent a replacement screen, and partial refund. Aliexpress tried rather unhelpfully to resolve the dispute by suggesting a 50% refund (and no replacement) but I just had to reject that and make my own counter proposal. It's a bit complicated, but got there in the end... Fitting the new screen looks easy - looking forward to it!

gibsonmb 2021/04/22 07:32

Just received my V2H4 here in the UK through AliExpress from the NanoRFE store. Very well packed with plenty of bubble wrap and outer cardboard box. All working just fine. just need some rubber feet for it now.

I could not resist and ordered a clone (with N connectors). It just came, my V2 plus4 model from official store will come soon as well.
I am not sure if there is a display issue with this first one, there are vertical stripes on very left of display.
See picture below. Is that sign of display disease, or a calibration issue or mismatch between display resolution and firmware ?
Any advice most welcome.

I wish the official version had the option for N connectors. Most all of
my test cables for duplexers and other filters are N connectors. I don't
have any test cables with SMA connectors. Which means that adapters have
to be used, not a good thing.

At frequencies below 500MHz, your sma to n adapters will be no issue and
contribute close to nothing to the measurements.

Hello Mick .. the "n socket" in real IS an adaptor screwed to sma socket
(and secured with a blob of solder!!)

so that means if you wanna use n sockets ... screw some adaptors on the
v2plus4 and be done with it (calibrate WITH that adaptor!)

the saa2n ... is a v2 with a 4 inch screen and sma to n ADAPTORS

so using adaptors is fine (in fact it is THE SAME THING)

Hey.  I'm new here.  I was casually checking out VNAs a few months ago, decided I kinda wanted a V2P4, found they were out of stock, so got on an email notification list at Tindie.  April 6th, I got an email saying there were back in stock.  I waffled for a few hours, then decided to place the order.  Later in the day, I checked the Tindie page and they were already out of stock again!  I just received mine yesterday.  It was packaged well and looks perfect.  So far, I've only just plugged it in and turned it on.

Hello,

Even though Owo has explained that v2 devices are no longer produced, and they are not adequate for metal housing, I am not sure if this product is a good choice:

https://www.tindie.com/products/13592894599/nanovna-v2-32inch/

It seems they have sold only 18 units so far. The problem is the official stores listed in https://nanorfe.com/nanovna-v2.html#buying are out of stock. Taobao web is blocked by my isp. I would prefer to buy the latest v2 plus4 from HCXQS if I knew when it will be available.

thank you

That unit is (originally) Hugen’s 3.2” screen version of the open source v2vna. I have one in my stable of vnas and it is fine. The advert is hopelessly outdated and shows the lack of understanding of the product by the seller. The device uses the same firmware as the first 2.8” screen original v2, the latest stable firmware is November 2020, although Dislord is rewriting it (see various posts on this).

The dynamic range etc can be improved with a few mods -some tantalum capacitors at various points, especially on the display board but also the 3.3v lines. I have found it is also improved by placing a load of 2mm thick ferrite plates (I got cheap on Ebay) on the main board, held on with Gaffa tape. I will change this for some ferrite flexible sticky sheet (thicker than 0.5mm when I find some at a decent price) cut to shape and placed on both sides of the main board.

I suspect the devices being sold are “old stock”. They should be fine, and are a good price.
