Beware of cheap underperforming clones

As of 2022 there are many badly performing clones on the market. V2/3GHz NanoVNA uses parts like ADF4350 and AD8342 which are costly and clones have been cutting costs by using salvaged or reject parts.

See official store and look for V2 Plus4/V2 Plus4 Pro versions only to avoid getting a bad clone. We have stopped selling V2.2 versions since October 2020, so all V2 hardware that are not Plus or Plus4 are not made by us and we can not guarantee performance.

Esteban H 2021/06/07 00:45

Dear NanoVNA V2 team,

Thanks in advance.
Esteban.

Well,

I totally HOPE it's the real thing being resold for an outrageous price
tag, because when I bought mine from the nanorfe official store it was
priced at 120 euro (with battery included) /ex shipping (13 euro)

Why did the price increase from *$129.00* to *$169.00* ??

G33RT 2021/06/20 12:22

The price for the NanoVNA V2 Plus4 was $129.00 and now $169.00 and yes this is outrageous.

As a Ham Radio opperator we all know this Hobby is expensive enough for most of us and now it seems they want to make advantage of it by increasing it's price. (LAME)

rocketeerbkw+groups. 2021/06/20 20:16

It didn't, it went to $149 first. There's an international computer chip shortage, it's been mentioned in other threads that parts are getting harder to obtain so costs are up.

Erich Kaltenbrunner 2021/06/21 05:58

As the prices always end with a 9 we soon will have a shortage of 9ers.

Erich Kaltenbrunner

ol2tmx 2021/06/21 09:13

Yes definitely , and the calibration set is not included but have to
additionally purchased for about $ 30 US. :-(

Unfortunate, I agree. As least some of the price increases may be
forced on them by component shortages. Transport, too, has been
affected, with one operator quoting price for a container from China now
costing eight times what it used to do ($16000 up from $2000), which may
affect component prices. The producers may themselves be Amateur Radio
operators, and may have been out of work through the pandemic. Who knows?

It may not simply be a gratuitous price increase. If it's no longer
good value for money then you may find something else which meets your
requirements.

Cheers,
David

Unfortunately components prices have skyrocketed. The MCU for example now cost 3 times as it used to. It was decided it's better than having it not available at all, so this is the best we can do now. In fact even now the price is lower than it should be based on costs, because we wanted to be considerate of users. You could wait for costs to come down but from what I see it's not likely in the next year. Last time I did a survey of clones they all used salvaged or reject parts, that's why they can be cheaper but you have no idea if they meet spec or not.

Before I designed this VNA, the cheapest 3GHz VNA you could get was the MiniVNA at $500, and it has much lower specs than the V2 Plus4 and has no display. It looks like nowadays you give an inch and people demand a mile.

Michael Stumpf 2021/06/21 08:08

I am appreciative that it's available. Frankly, also of the design that
allows me to own a tool I would never have purchased due to cost.

You're right, it's just a psychological thing, people don't like price
increases & will blame you because you're the first one they see. Am I
upset? Sure I don't like it, but to feel better all I have to do is go to
my local lumber aisle & see that a sheet of plywood is 3x what it was a
year ago.

My suggestion to the broader community is to understand the macro
environment we are in. Cost has gone way up + availability has become
uncertain. The requirements to order well in advance have come with this.
Smaller projects like this will be impacted much more than large ones that
can forecast millions of units of sales per year.

Thanks for designing & offering this.

Hi Owo,

many thanks for designing this outstanding tiny VNA. At this
cost-performance ration in the current situation on the component market
there is absolutely no reason to complain for anybody even at a slightly
higher price.

I totally agree.  It's "cheap at twice the price"

I've got plenty of applications for the NanoVNA as a "USB peripheral"
that don't even make use of the display. And the fact that the design
and software are fairly public means that weird offshoot ideas (1 Tx
port and 10 Rx ports) aren't too tough to do.

I've talked to people who would are contemplating buying the smaller
unit and dismantling it (because that's easier/cheaper than fabricating
custom boards).

Igor Jobim 2021/06/21 15:45

It's my case.
I bought two tiny minivna antenna analyzers and paid about 420 euros (wimo).
Today I have nanovna-H and H4 and have not used my minivnas for many months.

I think the only way it was offered this time is as the kit with
calibration items you probably need any way. Right now it is showing 52
available. When it first came up it only showed 40 and I think the added
90 some more to it. Again, right now it is showing 52 available.

For some reason they have 2 products of the same, use the other link and you should be able to order (w callibration kit only)

So, $199.? Lots of profit in that accessory package. Well, that's the
marketplace, as long as people are willing to pay it they can charge it. I
don't believe there's anything, feature for feature, close to it even at
that price point. Thanks

Is it worth the extra - will it get here sooner - or about the same (40
days)?

Thanks

Here is the way I looked at it, UPS to the States would be about $12.50
more. The less time it spends in shipping the less like it is going to
show up smashed like a lot of them were. To give you a better answer to
your question, I ordered one on the evening of June 17th. I have a use
for it as soon as I can get it so I thought it would be worth the extra
$12.50 for me. Again, keeping in mind I ordered mine on the evening of
June 17th. During the early morning hours of this morning I got an email
with an UPS tracking number. The tracking number shows that it is
supposed to be here by 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 24th. If it really
happens, and I have to believe it will since the tracking is from UPS,
then for me it was well worth the extra.
